“Changing the memories that form the way we see ourselves also changes the way we view others. Therefore, our relationships, job performance, what we are willing to do or are able to resist, all move in a positive direction.”
― Dr. Francine Shapiro, creator of EMDR therapy Getting Past Your Past: Take Control of Your Life with Self-Help Techniques from EMDR Therapy
EMDR therapy uses your brain's natural processing to help reprocess overwhelming and distressing life events.
Additionally, EMDR therapy helps the brain process these memories and allows normal healing to resume.
The experience is still remembered, but the flight, fight or freeze response from the original event is resolved.
EMDR uses rapid sets of eye movements or tapping (bilateral stimulation) to help update experiences like what happens during sleep.
When individuals sleep, they alternate between regular sleep and rapid eye movement.
This sleep patterns helps to process distressing things.
The alternating between sets of eye movements or tapping and brief reports about what is noticed, helps update memories to a healthier present perspective.
EMDR can help to address:
Trauma, grief, loss, anxiety, panic attacks, depression and dissociative disorders.
“However, today more than 20 scientifically controlled studies of EMDR have proven its effectiveness in the treatment of traumatic and other disturbing life experiences.”
