"There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man."

*Joe (name changed to protect client confidentiality) was feeling anxious in his daily life and was interested in developing calming strategies for anxiety. In the past, he participated in office-based therapy, but wanted to try a different approach.
In speaking with me during a consultation phone call, I informed him that the Equine-Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) Model of equine-assisted psychotherapy is implemented.
I explained that the EAGALA Model is an experiential modality that utilizes horses for growth and learning. I informed Joe that participants learn about themselves and others by participating in activities with horses and then discussing thoughts, beliefs, behaviors, and patterns. Additionally, I informed Joe that the EAGALA Model team consists of a mental health professional, equine specialist and one or more of the horses.
After learning about the EAGALA Model, Joe decided to try equine-assisted psychotherapy. Joe expressed noticing feeling calm while spending time with the horses. From his equine-assisted psychotherapy sessions, Joe learned and developed calming strategies for anxiety.
